What is AKLA?
AKLA (achla - adj. or interj. Awesome, excellent, great,) is a fellowship to connect Jewish teens of bar and bat-mitzvah age (12-14) to the amazing achievements in technology, medicine, security and the arts; within the Jewish community. Teens that complete our five-Sunday program, will come away with a deeper understanding of the awe inspiring Jewish contributions to the world. Our program is designed to inspire B’nai mitzvah students as they map their own course for achievement and mitzvah’s in the Jewish Community and beyond.
How AKLA works
AKLA is inspired by the partners it supports in both Los Angeles and Israel. Our program is designed to create the Jewish leaders of tomorrow by giving mitzvah students the opportunity to see the inner workings of these organizations that are making their own awesome contributions to the Jewish world. We believe the time for a child to focus on their unique heritage is during the preparations for their commitment to the Jewish community: their mitzvah (religious or non-religious) is a unique time for teens to delve into their Jewish roots and discover when, where and how the Jewish people have made lasting impacts on the world.
How applicants are chosen
Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to follow through on projects and a desire to pursue leadership roles. All applications are reviewed by an independent panel. The participant’s cost are underwritten by the David & Janet Polak Foundation.
